Sweetcorn, cabbage, cucurbits and other vegetables are produced under irrigation from October to June. Most of these vegetables are produced on contract and the surplus are sold on fresh produce markets.
The farm’s philosophy of quality and quantity is also maintained here. As part of the continued aim to ensure better quality produce a cooling plant is being planned to unlock a potential niche market for sweetcorn. This will entail that the sweetcorn be cooled within four hours of being harvested to ensure a high sugar content and longer shelf life. Few farmers in South Africa manage to do this in spite of a huge demand for supersweet sweetcorn.
